Claw Setting Ring

Learn to create an organic claw setting for an irregular shaped or rough stone and a sterling silver ring. You can also choose to work in brass. Participants may bring their own irregular shaped rough stone, crystal, cabochon or even a cool small rock. You will fabricate your setting and ring from start to finish using hand and power tools provided and given guidance with every step. We will start out with measuring your wire to your stone and will cut, form, solder your claws together and shape the seat to fit your stone. In addition you will learn a variety of techniques to create your ring shank and solder both pieces together, create the look you want, finishing with setting your stone, filing your claws and polishing. Then take home your shiny new ring!

This workshop has a maximum of 4 students for more personalized attention and will include all sterling silver or brass materials/consumables and use of all tools/equipment. Participants must be at least 18 yrs old. Workshop sign-ups are per person. Please sign up at least 48hours in advance or email to see if theres availability. Come and immerse yourself in a fun 2-day workshop of basic and intermediate metalsmithing techniques! This workshop is heavily technique driven in teaching the How & Why of what we are doing and encouraging creativity. All you need is interest and patience as you'll be guided along. Learn how to manipulate metal to create jewelry through demonstrations and hands-on work focusing on the proper techniques needed to build a strong foundation for the metal arts. Fabricated metal work will be designed on paper and translated into copper and/or brass with the guidance of the instructor. Participants will use hand and power tools and will learn the fundamentals of sawing, filing, hammering, shaping, texturing, torch control, multiple soldering techniques and patination. You will leave with at least 2 finished polished pieces with multiple parts and possibilities are pendants, medallions, keychain, earrings and experimentation with metal. This workshop has a maximum of 4 students and will include all materials/consumables and use of all tools/equipment.
